Kernersville is a small town in Forsyth county and the largest subdivision of Winston-Salem in the state. The town is located at the intersection of Highway 7 and Hillsboro road. The town is bordered on two sides by Lake Creek. A large chunk of the town lies in Guilford county and is surrounded by Hillsborough County.

The city is mostly agricultural with small areas of town that is residential. The city has a population of around 23,000 at the last census, up from just 17,125 at the previous census. The town was incorporated in 1931 and was originally called Ferncliff. It is very close to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Winston-Salem State University.
